Foil or Ink, How Do I Choose?
18th Feb 2025
Ever wonder how we achieve such pristine printing on your favorite products? It all comes down to our methods: Hot Stamping and Ink Printing. But what are those, exactly? On one side, we’ve got Hot Stamping—the showstopper of the printing world. It’s bold, it’s fancy, it practically winks at you. On the other side is Ink Printing—the reliable, effortlessly stylish option that’s all about details, depth, and a more natural finish.
So, which one is right for you?
What’s the Difference?
We’ll try not to nerd-out too much here, but understanding the application process will help inform your decision by knowing the options available to you. (And make you sound really interesting at your next dinner party.)
Pressed On vs Absorbed
Hot Stamping, also referred to as Foil Stamping, is a premium printing method that uses heat and pressure to transfer a roll of foil onto the packaging. A metal plate with your design is heated before stamping the foil onto your shopping bag, jewelry box, or label to create a distinct, eye-catching finish that sits right on top of your packaging like a permanent sticker.

Hot Stamp
Now that you know Hot Stamp = Foil, you’re probably thinking of shiny surfaces—or those delicate gold flakes you see atop decadent desserts. But foil comes in more finishes than Metallic! Our Satin foils are a softer, less reflective alternative. And our Matte foils resemble acrylic paint that provides a crisp pop of color and none of the shine. Regardless of the finish you choose, all foil applications stand out with a slight embossing effect that adds depth and a five-star feel.

First Impression
Adding foil to your packaging instantly ups the Wow! factor. Its sharp, clean features create a high-end appearance that resonates with luxury goods. Designer clothing, jewelry and handbag brands will use foil to convey exclusivity. Foil is often featured on wine and spirit labels for a sense of sophistication. And cosmetic and skincare lines will add foil accents for an elegant touch. It’s why foil is favored by those who want to create a premium experience!

When You’ll Use It
Foil functions best with simple text and images. While it can give definition to fine lines, there must be sufficient spacing between them, as there is a risk of the foil filling in the negative space during the application process. That said, don’t hesitate to ask whether foil could be in your future, as we have surprised even ourselves with what we’ve been able to pull off!
The finish of your packaging can influence your options, too. Packaging with a glossy texture will get the foil treatment exclusively. Think: our Gloss White Jewelry Boxes or Gloss Laminated Colored Euro Tote Bags. Finishes like these keep ink from absorbing into the product, so foil is your friend here.

Ink Print
Ink is the classic and cost-effective choice for custom branding. If your design requires a lot of area coverage, ink will provide some savings. Keep in mind that since ink absorbs into the product, rather than sitting on top of it like foil, ink will look less saturated by comparison. But while less vivid, ink is more versatile and can be customized to match your brand’s colors. There's no "close enough" here!

First Impression
Ink Printing on kraft or uncoated materials feels natural and down-to-earth, appealing to brands that prioritize authenticity, handmade craftsmanship, and storytelling. Conversely, ink can create a fresh and fun vibe with bold, colorful designs perfect for more casual or creative brands. Regardless of your brand aesthetic, ink printing suggests a focus on efficiency and usability, and your customers might associate you with reliability and accessibility—rather than exclusivity.

Why You’ll Want It
If Ink Printing had a résumé, Attention to Detail would top its list of skills. Intricate designs, photographic elements, patterns, and gradients are ink’s specialty. While foil can catch customer attention with its shine and sharpness, ink will keep their attention with its dedication to showcasing every detail. It’s also a great option if your brand loves a hand-drawn look. Since ink absorbs into the packaging, you can easily create an artistic marker motif.
And if sustainability is top-of-mind, using ink will ensure your recycled product (like our Color Recycled Kraft Paper Shopping Bags) can be recycled again even once it’s been customized! We use water-based ink, so your customers will leave with packaging they’ll remember—for its good looks and that it’s good for the planet—long after they’ve recycled it.

Still Can’t Decide?
¿Por qué no los dos? You can absolutely combine foil and ink to create head-turning designs! Whether they coexist side-by-side or in layers, you’ll be handing your customers a masterpiece that they’ll want to promote on their socials.
But if you simply must pick just one, consider these factors:
Your Brand’s Identity
- Hot Stamping adds a luxurious, high-end feel that’s popular in industries where premium branding matters.
- Ink Printing is more versatile, making it ideal for businesses prioritizing customization and sustainability across a range of brand aesthetics.
The Design’s Complexity
- Foil works best with simpler designs and text.
- Ink is ideal for logos with gradients, fine lines, or intricate illustrations.
Budget Considerations
- Foil can be more cost-effective for small, impactful elements.
- Ink is typically more economical for large print areas.
