How to Make a Wreath out of Ribbon

The holiday season is upon us! It’s easy to get caught up in the decoration madness, especially when everyone around you is rummaging through their attics for inflatable reindeer. It’s a time of frenzied creativity and ornate yard displays, but that creativity doesn’t have to come with a huge price tag. Today, we’ll show you how to make a wreath out of ribbon using supplies you probably already have at home. Sit down with a steaming mug of hot cocoa and prepare for the season with a ribbon-wrapped wreath that will add an intimate touch wherever you place it. It’s an especially enjoyable activity to share with your kids, and it makes a lovely door decoration or gift for a loved one.

Here are the materials you’ll need:

  • A foam wreath ring in any size you prefer
  • Lots of ribbon—about 5 yards’ worth
  • Scissors
  • Hot glue gun and glue strips
  • Fake flowers
  • Additional decorations—bells, extra ribbon

Step One: Wrap the Ribbons Around the Wreath

Pick one side of the wreath foam to be the front and the other to be the back. Use your hot glue gun to glue the end of your ribbon onto the back of the wreath. Wrap the ribbon around the ring (through the center) once, adding more glue before each continued wrap to stick the ribbon down. Repeat this process until your entire wreath is beautifully covered in festive ribbon.

Step Two: Glue on Flowers and Foliage

Cut your flowers from their stems and leaves and arrange them around your wreath before gluing them down. Once you’ve decided on placement, glue the flowers carefully onto the wreath. Glue the leaves around your flowers separately—this gives you more control over the final look of your wreath. Get creative! You can choose from many different kinds of flowers and use them minimally or generously, depending on how floral you like your wreaths.

Step Three: Add Optional Decorations

If you want a simple look for your ribbon-wrapped wreath, you won’t need this step—but if you want to let your decorative passions run wild, get that glue gun out again. Choose things to adorn your wreath with festive winter spirit— bells, Christmas tree figurines, small ornaments, and so on.
