5 Awesome Houseplants to Give as a Gift

Don’t get caught up in the mania of gift-giving—something as simple as a potted plant will brighten up anyone’s day. If you want to do something unique, consider our list of some of the best houseplants to give as a gift.
Succulents
Though they are small and delicate looking, succulents can thrive anywhere. Place them in teacups, decorative containers, terrariums and they’ll sit there adorably as an eye-catching display. Succulents thrive in low-moisture environments, and thus require minimal effort to survive.
Aloe
Aloe-ha to aloe! Its medicinal properties make this plant an epic gift. Growing your own aloe provides you with on-hand sunburn ointment from the leaves, which are filled with a clear, cooling gel. On the other hand, aloe latex, a yellow pulp found on the outside of the plant, contains digestive enzymes that act as a laxative.
Lucky Bamboo
While the name is a misnomer—the lucky bamboo plant is actually not a bamboo at all—this is a great gift for people who don’t know the first thing about plants. Though it requires some sunlight, it does well indoors in low light. In addition, this plant grows in water, not dirt, which makes for very easy plant care. Just be sure to replace the water every two weeks, and your Lucky Bamboo might even outlast you.
Lavender
Though not a traditional houseplant, when it blooms it emits a delicate fragrance. It’s more difficult for this plant to achieve its proper growth and leaf color indoors because it requires lots of direct sunlight. If you don’t have a south-facing window, or if you live in a particularly overcast region, you can stimulate sunlight with artificial, fluorescent light. Using the right-sized container for your plant is essential, as excess soil can become waterlogged and affect your plant’s growth. Use a container that is 1-2 inches larger than the plant’s root ball.
Herbs
Help your friends start their very own herb garden. In addition to sunlight, herbs need to be planted in pots with drainage holes to prevent overwatering. The easiest plants for an indoor herb garden are basil, mint, chives, parsley, and rosemary. Present them with this guide to help them pick the right space for an herb garden.
